SYF 2009 - The Prelude.

Views from a humble senior......

It's 4am in the morning! What's in sight? I can see all of our juniors sound asleep..getting themselves recharged and ready for their big day! They are really tired...Having been through intensive trainings and a roller coaster of emotions - tears, joy, anger, satisfaction, disappointment - over the past few weeks, this 'once-thought-impossible' batch of members has certainly grew from strength to strength and matured as a CO.

The Beginning

'Oh my gosh? What is this?! Is this even an orchestra?..' The humble senior came back to PRSSCO and he got a shock of his life! Due to the fact that most of the juniors didn't know my identity at that point in time..I could clearly see all their ill-disciplined and mischievous acts..The conductor was absent and the kids were left running around as though they have found their long-lost freedom..I left with a heavy heart..with many questions racing through mind..awaiting for answers...spoke to a few seniors..spoke to the teachers..and i found answers..
It was a struggle..I didn't want to get myself involve with PRSSCO affairs but I just couldn't take things lying down..so after a few practices of observation..I initiated the first step..I approached the committee..and to my realisation..they were really a bunch of leaders who were still in their comfort zone..totally unaware of the situation..and i really wondered..how much does CO mean to them?..
The committee would definitely remember that day because i exchanged really harsh words with them..and we ended the meeting with all of them feeling guilty and really depressed..As much as they remembered that day..it was certainly the significant start to this SYF journey..

The Process

For some reason..the process was a memorable one..watching our juniors growing up and improving..is definitely one of the greatest satisfactions a senior can have! Even though I was really worried about them from the start..i deliberately chose not to go back too frequently..simple reason..the committee has to experience and handle difficult situations themselves..after all..they are the ones who lead the CO...and unsurprisingly..they didn't let me down...I could finally sense their passion for CO and their desire for PRSSCO to excel as a whole..CO became an important part of their life..so kudos to the committee! you people deserves the credit!
Then again..it was a weird occurrence..Despite not knowing many of them, I found myself rather bonded to these group of juniors..As I witnessed their progress...I felt as though I am one of them..(and this explains why i am bloggin at 4am..cause i can't get to sleep!) Their determination, unity..and the beautiful music played..has revived my long-lost passion for chinese music..perhaps they will understand this feeling after they graduate from school.....nevertheless..I would like to say a big Thank You!..for being such wonderful juniors!..

The Conclusion

Conclusion?..Gold?..Gold with Honours?..Nope..not Gold..not Gold with Honours as well..but ONE ORCHESTRA!..and UNITY is the reason why PRSSCO is the best! My dear juniors..as long as you stay focused..give ur best shot...irregardless of the results..every single one of us ( the seniors)..will give u the warmest round of applause, our fullest support right to the end! I wish you all the best for your BIG day! YOU CAN DO IT! (=

As the clock ticks away ever closer to the SYF. You have had your doubts. Others have had their doubts. But you have proven everyone wrong. Every single hour of practice, never wasted. It seems only yesterday that you weren’t performing up to standards but now, look at yourselves.

The unitedness of the whole orchestra have helped previous generations into accomplishing their goals and dreams for the orchestra and it shall continue to inspire and motivate future generations. Standing together. Helping each other. These have been the qualities that prevented any obstacles from standing in the way of the Chinese Orchestra. This has always been the reason behind the adage: Attitude matters more than talent. Together all of you can do it; all of you can achieve that coveted award, The Gold with Honors.

Up to this point, where many may have already fallen, you still strive to perfect every single aspect of your performance. All of your hard work is commendable. Impressive in fact. With this same spirit, with less than 4 days to go, you will achieve what cynics have thought impossible. You will prove others wrong that although talent and skills are important, with the proper attitude, you can achieve your dreams and visions.

You have invested your best and in 4 days time you will be among the best and most commendable Chinese Orchestra out there.

From the seniors to the teachers, we believe that you will definitely do well in this year’s SYF.

Hope that all of you are not so stressed with exams! Remember that you should relax and take care of your health as the exams draw nearer. Don't over exert yourself and fall sick or worse just black out during the exam!

I know that all of you will do well for your exams and make CO proud. Not only CO but the School and ultimately your Parents and everyone around you!

Remember that everything starts small but ends up extremely humongous. A small tiny seed may appear tiny at first but in actual fact it is a forest because this seed will grow into a tree which will grow flowers which will produce fruits which will produce seeds and then more trees and more flowers and more fruits; in the end you have a whole forest.

Likewise, exams is just a small seed which can be conquered easily and it will lead to bigger things!

For the seed to grow into a forest, it needs hard work. Exams can only be conquered by hard work!

Did you know that geniuses only uses 4% of their brain and an average person like you and I uses 3%? That's just a mere 1%!! If we just put in the extra effort we can become geniuses!

okie this post is mainly for people who has any questions on what to bring and stuffs.

At least 3 sets of clothes. Prefer to have school related shirts such as Co tee or Pe attire. If not home clothes should be fine. At least 1 dark colored shirt for wet activities.

Anything that you need for bathing, shampoo, towel, toothbrush and so on.

Slippers will only be meant for bathing purposes, so please bring shoe.

A set of writting material which include papers or notebook should be fine.

Raincoat/ Poncho, what is a poncho, a type of raincoat. For poncho is quite cheap, should be able to get for less than a dollar even i think. In case of bad weather, you will need it.

Ez link card worth of at least $10, mainly for transportation not to have mac half way :)

Optional **
Sleeping bag, if you are wondering what is a sleeping bag, is a portable "bed" that you can sleep on. If you do not have is ok, either borrow or just use blanket also can. Most important is keep yourself warm. It wil be very cold in the night.

Medication
Sick, must bring medication and inform leaders or teachers that you are sick or just recover.

For those of you who do not know, Senior Minister of State came down to our school to pay a visit. One of the station happened to be PrssCo. Miss PeiYun, Vice-chairman of PrssCo did a short briefing about PrssCo followed by the percussion section who perform for her the famous 鼓乐1号 [Gu Yue No. 1]. We are honoured to have the Senior Minister of State to sign on one of our drums.

Thanks, Kok Peng, for doing up the prssco blog so nicely. When I saw it, I was like 'wow!' Kok Peng is already our alumni and he's still so dedicated to prssco, updating the blog regularly and coming back to help us whenever he can. CO members, this is one senior you can definitely learn from.

Anyway, my purpose of this entry is to encourage every member to press on for the Lunch-time Concert. Teachers, including our Principal and students from my classes have asked abt the concert and they are looking fwd to it. Some have promised that they will definitely be going down to support. Also, some seniors will rush down fr their schs to support us nxt Tues too.

So see, your efforts are being appreciated. Let's do a great job and enjoy ourselves and make others enjoy nxt Tues!

The thing I like most abt this concert is that its the first time we have the whole concert to ourselves, no sharing with other schs or other grps, like what we usually do. And many things are happening coz of the efforts of different students - not anyone else, not teachers or instructors, but students - members of prssco - YOU. This is definitely something that we can be proud of.

So ganbatte kudasai! Jia you! Press on! All the way!

okay. this is peiyun. i know there has been alot of confusion about the camp and stuff. so here, clearing up all the question marks, here are the details. ignore the previous details. thanks and sorry for the confusion.

Tomorrow, 11th march tuesday. everyone will report at 7.30am in the CO room.

the initial message that was passed down was that it will be 天山盛会combine practice in the noon. due to some problems, 丁老师is unable to return back to singapore by tomorrow. therefore, tomorrow's combine practice will be changed to SECTIONAL PRACTICE FOR EVERYONE.

HI EVERYONE! yanpeng from sec 4 PERCUSSION is here!

i know that quite a number of ppl who was not present in CO on tues, 4march, did not get the co march holiday practice schedule, and the ex seniors might not be informed too. so i'd decided to update u guys about the schedule (:

TUESDAY - 7.30am to 6pm; co camp first day, and combined practice in the afternoon for those who are involved in Tian Shan Sheng Hui.

WEDNESDAY - 7.30am to 10pm; co camp second (last day) no practice. *leaders pls reached by 7am*

THURSDAY - 9am to 12noon; combined practice tianshanshenghui
1pm to 2.30pm; theory lesson for SEC ONE. (combined practice pupils' lunch)
2.30pm to 6pm; Sectional practice.

SATURDAY - 9am to 1pm; combined practice tianshanshenghui.

for the above list of camps and practices, they are all compulsory. Combined Practice will be lead by Ms Ding as she will be coming back for this one week. so kindly attend the practices. THANK YOU for taking time to read the info and if there's enquiries, pls tag (: we'll reply ASAP.

ps: extra clothings required for second day of camp. there will be wet games (: and pls be early by 15 mins for everyone. especially combined students so that u guys can tune ur instruments first.

HEYYS!!!

hi to all PRSSCO members. yup, this is my first time blogging here. =)

just to keep an update to all members, including our seniors.

WHAT? PRSSCO chalet!
WHERE? Aloha Changi Chalet H
WHEN? 4th december till 6th december 2007. (BBQ on the 4th of december)
WHO? all PRSSCO members. seniors from chingwei's batch till sec 1s of 2007.

so yup, everyone is invited and hopefully we can get back our seniors to join us.

for current members, sec 1s to sec 3s. please hand in your conscent form!we need to know if you are staying. ALL sec1s to sec3s, please report at void deck of block 241, opposite new school building at tampines at 2.30pm sharp. we will be having our Games day 2007. this is a compulsory activity for all members. and for pupils who are staying over at the chalet, pls minimise the amount of items you will be bringing to the chalet.

in this Games day, the main objective of this activity is to bond the whole CO together. i know this may be alittle ridiculous to see the results after this activity. but we really hope to provide the opportunity for our members to know each other better and hopefully, we can achieve our home-like CO. =) this is an effort that the main committee has put in and we really hope to have the cooperation of everyone.

i hope all the sec 2 & 3s will go and attend this workshop because it'll definitely be very beneficial. optional for the sec 4s.

GOOOOODDDDDDD MORNING PRSSCO! (as dom and sharir liek to put it, but theirs is korea)

finally i have to type something here in the prssco blog again. hope u all dun find me irritating.
040407 has gone passed just like that. this most anticipated day of the year is over, but though it's over, we have at least brought something home. the prestigious GOLD WITH HONOURS! remember the times when we were still struggling with our scores, trying to put every section together so that the song can be played nicely. the yin zhun, the jie zhou and the tai feng. and now we can conciously tell ourselves that we have put in our utmost effort and done PRSS proud. a consecutive gold, or should i say 2golds +1 GWH, is really hard to achieve.

for the rest of the juniors in prssco, please appreciate ms ding adn other instructors more! because w/o them the thought of prssco getting gwh will not even cross ur mind, seriously. the scoldings form them all meant well. coem to think of it, now that co has ended for the sec 4s, i are starting to miss the scoldings from mr zhang bin. i've been scolded by him ever since i got into gaohu which is like sec 2? can u imagine how much ive scolded alrdy? haha okay okay whatever the case, love them, they will love u even more.

For those who are taking grades, i know you have very tight schedules and you have classes almost everyday, but still you came down for our practices at your best effort. good luck for you grades!

next there are some people who have lead us to what we have today, whom we have to thanked.

thanks for making sure that everythign will turn out well every practice. making sure that attendance would be taken, buying whatever that's necessary for the orchestra, decorating our facilities and so on. w/o the other 7 of u, both (ck and me) our lives in CO would be terrible, cos we cannot possibly do so many things.

the sectional leaders
sectional leaders, i've seen most of you grown to like co more and more adn it's because of ur enthusiasm towards co that somehow lights up the spirit of the members in your respective sections. i know sometimes it must be hard on u guys as i may have many demands, but i'm glad you followed the insturctions. the future is still bright for you guys, continue to work hard and bring prssco to greater heights!

the macho logistics
sometimes i really admire these people. they are just of my age and they can carry insturments that are extremely heavy, example, the chimes. w/o the help of the logistics do you think we can have practices in the hall? do you think we can move the instruments to the cd shelter so easily? seriously, without them we cant have out practices. they are not paid but yet they are willign to stay back after every lesson just to clear up the place for u guys. form the bottom of my heart, thanks(:

how can i ever forget all 80 of you. prssco will not be able to achieve GWH without all of u. anyone missing from the team makes a difference! thank you for following up withthe schedules, i know it was very tiring walking down the road to SYF, but u put up with it. and now we have come to this, GWH. inspire the next generations adn tell them to work hard and practise, not only for SYF but for every piece of song they learn.

i hope everybody would try to improve on certain areas that they think is not satisfactory enough, after viewing the videos last saturday.
there's just 2 months left, or perhaps lesser, to SYF. just suffer these 7 more weeks, put in your utmost effort and you will sure be able to see the results you want. here i want to share a quote with all of you from Reader's Digest, "to see the rainbow, you must first bear with the rain". i thought this greatly applies to the orchestra. in order to get GOLD or even GOLD WITH HONOURS, i think all of should all practise real hard. if you;ve mastered the song already, work on your movements, because it is equally important as playign the piece well. music requires constant practice and then a sweet melodious piece can be presented.
so i urge all of you to pay full attention to Ms Ding as well as your respective section's instructor, as to where to improve on and so on. in this way, neither do they have to repeat every single practice nor do we always have to waste time on that particular bar and can work on other areas.
moreover we are the only neighbourhood school to have achieved GOLD and a three consecutive gold awards would gain the school more reputation such that when people ask which school's orcheatra are you from. you will proudly reply "PRSSCO!".

i would consider today's cca day to be rather succesful event.
everybody did their best today. whether is the performance, giving out of flyers or even those who helped out in preparation for this event. the impromtu songs were pretty great haha.

thank you everybody to be able to adapt to changes so quickly, as in most of the things were changed rather last minute so i thought people would start jeering and so on, but surprisingly not a single soul attempted that, makign me feel very appreciated.
over here, i would too like to apologise to anyone whom i might have offended today, due to annoyance. maybe i shouted at you or what, but i hope you people to put it to heart, because it was really not with ill intentions. very sorry to the teachers if i had accidentally showed some unhappy expressions, to sectional leaders and co members if i had shouted at you all and most importantly to the i have offended today!

at the same time, i really appreciate the efforts out in by the EXCO ,sectional leaders and the ruan girls, who helped to blow up the balloons and twisted them into cute little puppies. who helped to plan the songs that were put up during the event. whatever it is everyone deserves to be praised because im sure everyone did well! *claps
as for myself, i will improve more in terms of organising certain events, everything will not be so rush in the future and jobs will be assigned to the respective in charge. i promise..

this blog is rather dead again.. so i think i should add a post.

beginning of a new year. where hopes can be achieved, where miracles can be created, where dreams do come true. but what hopes, what miracles or what dreams do we want. needless to say, a gold/ gold with honours for SYF 2007. this has been the talk of the orchestra.
how are we going to achieve this?
it's through hard work, through blood and sweat and of cos through the cooperation of every single individual. bcos if you add in that little extra effort, you'll be able to make a difference to the entire orchestra.
2007 is going to be hectic for the first half of the year. with performances, concerts, rehearsals and tough traning lined up. pls do not be intimidated with the word tough, bcos it is only this word that can bring us glory. with hard work, nothing can be achieved. a chinese saying "xian ku hou tian" (experience bitterness in the beginning, but reap good rewards in the end). "shi jie shang mei you bu lao er huo de dong xi" (no hardwork=no rewards)

so i really hope eevryone will be united and come for every single prac during these 4 months. it's just 4 months and everything is over. so do bear with it okay..

hello everybody.
okay sorry for the very late post.
promised to do it last week, but failed. very sorry.

nvm. yesterday's concert impacted me alot. in what sense? i saw really enthusiatic ppl, those who are looking forward to the performance itself. on the other hand, there were ppl who did not. whatever the case i hope thru this performance, everyone of you have made significant improvements in terms of your skills, your stage performance and even your leadership skills. some of you may think, hwo is it possible to develop leadership skills thru a concert. i can honestly tell you, leadership skills can be seen in any ways, in anything you do. in my point of view, leadeship is not just being able to lead the group, but also, as mentioned by miss ho, beign able to communicate with your team well and even knowing all the members, helping them in any difficulties they face. there's a chinese saying "zhi ji zhi bi, bai zhan bai sheng" in english, it means, know your opponents well and win all battles (not a good tranlastion, but thats what it basically means). why am i saying this? i had a talk with miss ho in the bus a couple of days ago. what she said made me reflect on the things ive done in chinese orchestra.

this is what i thought: i was not able to communicate well enough with my members therefore, not able to gain their fullest respect. worst, not being able to communicate with my very own vice chairman.
(if i had offended you in any case, im sincerely apologising. perhaps this is the way ive been speaking to you since sec 1 and im not able to change it. so i'll try my best to improve and work more with u together, bcos i alone cannot brign up the entire CO. it's when we combine forces, we would able to do it ;D)

yesterday when i walked home from my bus-stop, i happen to pass by this andy lau's poster and spotted a line saying "when 2 of them combine, they share a common goal." or something like that. i hope this applies to all co members. we must work together to achieve what we want to achieve. that something we want to achieve, is that target that has alwys been in our minds.

on a high note, i would also like to thank and congratulate the sectional leaders for the wonderful job theyve doen so far. im beginning to see some changes and i hope to see more in the future. take for instance yesterday, all of u tried your best in keeping the group quiet during the concert, which is good.
also i would like to thank all participants, logistics and teachers, for without any one of you, nothing can go on smoothly.

The recent CO training camp has left me on an all-time high that I feel compelled to blog, in your CO blog. Somehow in Dunman, I sensed the passion and excitement everyone has, the motivation and desire to perform, the love for music.

Seriously after having been in CO for 4.5 years, I’m definitely grateful that I’m placed in CO. For CO is a CCA that has opened my heart to students. It has taught me love and how to love unconditionally. I bet the rest of your teachers feel the same way too. That CO provides meaning beyond that of a CCA. Even though sometimes we are limited by funds and challenged by students and instructors but I do find CO is a meaningful CCA that is in a league of its own.

Bet you didn’t know these:

I didn’t know that I love CO until I tried.
I don’t know about you but I have grown to love PRSSCO. So very much.
I love the way you learn music from scratch.
I love the way you guide your juniors.
I love the way you speak to others about your CCA with pride.
I love the way you treat me as a teacher and yet a friend as well.

You know, PRSSCO is definitely a CCA with a difference. For I hope that CO is a place which is overflowing with love. Love for music, love for your seniors, love for your juniors, love for learning, love for your instructors, love for your teachers.

Hey guys, we know in our hearts, we need to work a lot harder for SYF. Not because we want to get a Gold (it’s important!) but because we want to do our best. That’s even more important for I don’t want you living a life of ‘What If’. When I had students telling me that it is impossible to get a Gold next year, my response was that as long as we have tried our best, we can answer to our hearts.

I promise that the teachers will do my best but our efforts alone will probably not make as big as difference. We need YOU to make that difference.

EAST ZONE COMPETITION.

Date: 27th Nov 2006
Time: 9am - 6pm.

We participated in this east zone competition which is held at dunman high secondary. I'm sure that it was a really scary experience for those competitors who is having a solo performance on the stage for the first time. But, from these competition, we bound to have learnt something useful no matter what position we get, be it gold, silver, bronze or even certificate of participation. Ms Ding once told us that this competition is not to test your skills but to test your courage. Well, those who have joined this competition have more or less overcome their fear when performing alone! Anyway, here's are the results for the competition.

this is first time posting here. very sorry. haha.
nonetheless, i'm sure people who had gone for the east zone camp recently had absorbed quite alot of new knowledge, whether is it in terms of their skills, discipline or any other things. dom and i had also been to the leadership-cum-conductor camp. and upon looking at the reflections of those who had gone for EZ camp, i realised that both camps had taught several similar things.

for example, punctuality is the key to success. this had been a major problem of prssco and had yet to be solved. in my opinion, this issue would not be resolved for ever, if we do not have the coorperation of every single co individual. as mentioned, co is a big family and it cannot operate properly. thus i really appeal to all out there to be punctual for all practices. refrain from giving excuses like forgetting that there's co on a particular day, because the calendar has been given out already. if you do not have one kindly approach any co teachers for it.
can i also urge everyone to come beforehand for every practice to spare time for tuning, esp for erhu, cello and tanboyue. if your instrument is super hard to tune, do come earlier to do it.

another issue is the delay thats occurs every session. whenever there's combined practises, the ava room would be empty. people would either be late or for those who had come early, hang around the corridor, go toilet and so on. or else, people would be in the co room, saying that they are tuning or what. (no offence to anyone)
please be seated on the dot and wait for ms ding to come. meanwhile you can prac on certain bars that you are not familiar with. in this way, lessons can be carried out on time and we can therefore end on time too.

on that note, i too would like all sectional leaders and exco members to help with this situation. if anyone of you happen to spot people hanging around during lessons, please do not hesitate to call them back their respective rooms. this would reduce the workload of teachers, chingkiat and myself. during combined sessions, all of you can also help to keep your section silent, so that ms ding would have a very pleasure time teaching us, without having to scold us due to the increasing noise level.

thank you everyone for your copperation and i'd try to post here more often too.
*issues mentioned here have no offence to anyone. if you have any problems or suggestions to make co a better place, feel free to tell me, the teachers or even the EXCO members.

ps: last sunday's performance was terrific. many other schools were shocked by our performance. this proves that our efforts have not gone down the drain. continue to work hard everyone and gold award would thus be awaiting prssco.

Hello CO PEEPS~

I think the video was great, thanks to Mr Wong. hehe. I am looking forward to CO camp. This might be the last CO camp that i m attending, but i know it's gonna be the most wonderful one. farewell party lehs, 1st and last that i can attend. i'm looking forward to it, i guess the sec 4s are too! i had received an invitation card frm sec 3s cocm, thanks for the card yeah! it's nice!

Thinking back of the times I was in CO:

[Sec 1[ When i 1st went into CO, i have to choose Percussion, as i cant get into dizi. But i did not regret, as my seniors are so friendly and fun! They brought laughter to us and made us love Perc. I believe all my fellow Perc peeps will strongly agree on this fact!

[Sec 2[ I can tell you, it's not the best part of my time in co, however, i learnt the most from this year. My skill wasn't good, partially due to lack of practice. I got scoldings from seniors. There was even once in training, i got blisters on my hands and in the end, they burst and bleed, wood splints even got into my blisters. my perc peeps also have such situations. Ching wei(then CO chairman) stepped in at that time, to speak up for us. I can tell you, my CO peeps, my days in those time wasn't too good, but good days come after rainy days. Hard work does contribute in success!

[Sec 3[ Most of the time, we are practising hard for SYF and also to mentor Sec 1s. During these days, i had a lot of fun with my perc peeps, sometimes behind the scene, we will slack and have fun. We would complain about Ding Lau Lau and the hectic schedule that CO has. Nonetheless, we have fun during the process, eg. having practices in TECC [ eating instant noodles and drinking bubble teas outside 7 11 with my perc peeps.=p , God knows why we love instant noodles and bubble teas so much] oh yes, this year was also the year whereby i felt so proud that i was in co, as we had TOGETHER achieved SYF GOLD.

[Sec 4[ This was the time when i realised what is a senior's expectations.During my sec 2s time, i did complaint that why the seniors have so high expectations for us, why did they keep on forcing us to practise. But now, in the shoe of a senior, i realised why. So, juniors, don't think that ur seniors are focing you to practise, because they themselves know very well that if you don't practise, life in co will not be good for you.

I think my only regret in CO was that i neglected my current Sec 3s Perc juniors. I am very sorry that i didnt coach all of you much.

Hereby, I wanna say that i am glad that i came into co.

hello people! Haha it's 3:54am now to be exact and I'll probly be ZZzz-ing soon. So before I do that, I'll just do a post now. My fwen told me that there's this countdown party (not the Sentosa one) @ godknowswhere (I really don't know!). Can go there and countdown and play with foam (as if my toilet don't have).
